Do the scary thing….The rewards are so much greater than doing the comfortable, easy thing.

What is it that you do when you’re avoiding something that you know is important to do to achieve a goal you’d love, that’s a bit scary?

My default is tidying, getting organised.

I can clear my desk, sort out folders on my laptop and organise my notes.

I’ll even resort to domestics – once the dishes are cleared/washing is done/place is tidy, I’ll have a clear space to do what’s needed…

It’s delusional. And it never helps in creating what I want. Because, with tidying or organising, when is it ever finished?

You’ll have your pattern, which could be different.

Do you need to get everyone else organised first? Are you thinking – once I’ve got the kids settled, happy, nourished, I can get on to what I’d love to do for myself?

Your distractions might relate to finances – I need money for that thing I’d love to do, so I’ll keep doing something I don’t enjoy in order to gather the money to move towards the thing I’d love.

Or, I’ll spend time and energy  chasing down savings so that I optimise the income I have, to make sure at some point there will be enough for me to do what I’d love.

This happens because tension arises when we connect with something we’d love, and we look to resolve that tension. So we start doing what we think needs to be done.

We kid ourselves that we are doing something towards what we’d love.

Most of the time we’re not even aware that we’re kidding ourselves. We believe that we must fulfil our obligations to our partner/the family/the boss/the Business, before we can get onto the things that really make our heart sing.

But really we’re just doing, and in many ways it’s the worst thing we can do, because we’re not even allowing ourselves to recognise that we are avoiding what really needs to be done.

We can bask in the false belief that we are taking action towards that thing we’ve been saying for a while that we’d like to do, love to do.

But really, if you want to paint a picture, it requires paper and paint and for you to pick up the paintbrush and dip it in the paint.

If you want to write a book, it requires a pen and paper, or a keyboard, and for you to start writing.

What is it that your heart is calling for, that you would love to achieve, to have, to do?

Let yourself imagine that, to see it as fully as possible with all the colourful detail.

Then ask yourself what’s the step you need to take first towards that. Then do that…

Let me know if you need some help to tune in to what you’d really love. Sometimes we’ve buried it deeply because it seems so fanciful or unattainable.
